Graham taught about Reframing Our Thinking during part I of our Thursday morning Global Leaders’ Summit. I appreciated this teaching so much. It reminded me of how important it is to evaluate each of my thoughts, and to replace the negative thoughts with positive ones. Once again, thanks to Janet Mangum for the great notes! Here’s what Graham shared with us:
Repentance is an invitation to think differently and have your mind renewed.
Keeping an upgrade depends on:
- Receiving God’s perspective on who we are in him.
- Adjusting our thinking in line with his thoughts over us, which enables us to keep every upgrade he gives us. We win the battle to get free, but then we need to win the battle to stay free. Every breakthrough has to have a follow through.
- Establishing a new mindset. If you don’t, you will default back to where you were before. There’s one battle to take ground, another to hold ground. Holding that ground depends on how we think and see ourselves and the language we use from that point on.
- Using language that expands our personal territory in the Spirit. There is a territory with your name on it. We are a stakeholder in the Kingdom.
Isaiah 61:1-7 is Jesus’ identity statement:
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me,
Because the Lord has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
3 To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.”
4 And they shall rebuild the old ruins,
They shall raise up the former desolations,
And they shall repair the ruined cities,
The desolations of many generations.
5 Strangers shall stand and feed your flocks,
And the sons of the foreigner
Shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.
6 But you shall be named the priests of the Lord,
They shall call you the servants of our God.
You shall eat the riches of the Gentiles,
And in their glory you shall boast.
7 Instead of your shame you shall have double honor,
And instead of confusion they shall rejoice in their portion.
Therefore in their land they shall possess double;
Everlasting joy shall be theirs.
We can’t have a divided mindset. A keyword used in this portion of scripture is instead. It means “In place of as an alternative to, in preference to.” Every time a negative shows up, God will give you something positive. Every negative is attached to a positive. Jesus never used the word problem because there are no problems in heaven… He came talking about what heaven is like and you are a citizen of heaven — “This is how we think and we want you to think like we think. We’re not here to help you think better, but gloriously.” Jesus came talking about possibilities. You’ve got the easy part of the job, God has to do all the work, you only have to believe. Give the Holy Spirit more work to do. Faith gets heaven working. Faith means we are in partnership with God. The very least we can do is trust the Lord. What if our thinking got to such a level that we could see what God was desiring to do and partner with HIM!
Negatives have something brilliant from God attached to it.
Repair ruined cities and rebuild! What if a million Christians went to Detroit and rebuilt it using their money?
William Wilberforce, who led the abolition of slavery in England, started a movement called let’s make goodness fashionable. Unemployment was eradicated and the whole country was changed because someone believed that the power of the goodness of God was greater than any power. He changed culture and the mindset of a nation.
It’s not difficult if we know who we are! We will repair ruined cities. We will bless the generations that have been ruined and devastated.
We can do anything that he did. I’ll do all the smaller and lesser miracles and we’ll save all the best ones for you! Greater things than these will you do! Saving all the extraordinary stuff for you. Peter passed and they got healed by his shadow!
Jesus wants you to be wonderful in the earth. “We want people to look at you and see ordinary people and take note that you have been with Jesus. We are making you in our image.”
God won’t give his glory to another, but you’re not another, you are the bride of Christ, you are the friend of God, you are a daughter of God, you are not another. If you can’t be separated from the love of God you can’t be separated from the glory of God. Humble yourself… he exalts you and you will live in His glory. Reframing is a way of thinking that rebuilds our thinking and our language so we are restored to God in all His fullness.
We may have received more input from the flesh world and devil than from the kingdom of God. Religion calls us a sinner and God calls us a saint. Religion focuses on the old man and tries to change his behavior. God focuses on the new man and Christ in us. Christ is all and in all and he has the preeminence in all our thinking and language.
Inner Man of the Spirit
If the natural man controls our thinking and lifestyle, we become vulnerable to fear, fret, torment, …The mind of the Spirit lives in the life of Jesus within. The kingdom of heaven is within. The reborn man of the Spirit calls the shots. We are learning to live from the inside to the outside. God doesn’t speak to the mind – its an impenetrable barrier. It doesn’t work that way. God speaks into your heart and it explodes into the inside into your natural thinking so you are changed from within. The inner man of the spirit only lives in the presence of God. The inner man of the Spirit cannot be touched by the world around us and is called the secret place where Jesus mingles with your spirit and that is the one God is touching and releasing.
The inner man of the Spirit governs your soul and governs the way you see, think, and speak and all that comes from within. We have to be led by the Spirit from the inner man so we are ruled from within. Reframing guarantees the transformation by the renewing of the mind..
Look within instead of looking out there. Looking for visitational rather than habitational, limits what God can do in you. Practice habitational experience as a living reality.
What on earth has God prepared for you to do from heaven? Don’t you want to know that?
God reveals them through the Spirit. The spirit searches all things.
Appraisal means to evaluate the worth, the significance and the status of the thought you are currently having. We have to take every thought captive.
Ask yourself , “Where is that thought going to take me?” We think that all these thoughts are something we are supposed to deal with. The Bible says we can ask questions about these thoughts. Is it making me more like Jesus? Is it taking me to him or away form him? That’s a beginning of spiritual appraisal. Don’t deal with the negative thought from your flesh.
Your soul loves God, it just wants God on its terms. Your spirit wants God on HIS terms. Your soul wants to rule your spiritual experience.
People get into worship to get spiritual highs alone or as a lifestyle. What happens to you in your emotions is good but its not the reason we get into worship. The reason we get into worship because we want to adore him. Getting into worship just to seek a high will get you so far and then it will default to something less.
Your soul wants to rule the experience, your spirit wants to experience the rule of God.
Dealing with Negatives
Deal with negatives from a higher level. Deal with it from Colossians 3:1 – set your mind on things above, not on earth. You don’t attack it on this level, you exchange that thought with another one. That better thought takes you into a higher place. We exchange them for better ones. The mind of Christ. “I killed off your negativity on the cross. You don’t’ have to speak negative. I did away with all negativity. If a negative thought comes to you, you can exchange it for a better thought.”
That’s what Jesus came to give us out of His identity statement in Isaiah 61. When God grants you something he expects you to take him for granted. A negative thought is caused by a negative picture. Reframing is a skill. An unsuitable frame can ruin a good picture. A great frame can turn a good picture into a brilliant picture. A wrong frame means no breakthrough. All of us want new but we think old.
We want new stuff. Unless your thinking changes you won’t be transformed. Romans 12:2 – how you thnk is critical to your growth in Jesus.
Double mindedness is unstable. You have one mind that is stable – the mind of Christ – get into it.
Every negative thought is designed to give you an upgrade. Every negative thought is there to point to something better.
If you study light and light bulbs – they are made up of a positive and negative charge. With every negative thought is a spark of the Holy Spirit that can turn it into something else. It’s a joy and pleasure to think brilliantly. It’s the fastest way to get victory!
Everything is new – all old passed away – an exchange program about our thinking and language.
Don’t be captive to perceptions that impact negatively on all our emotions. The weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but divinely powerful to tearing down strongholds…. what is that weapon? The way you think — taking every thought captive to Christ. New man thinking destroys speculations. When we think about things without a foundation, but only worry panic and fear… all those speculations work against us and weigh us down. If God is the most loving person ever, you have to think in a loving way if you want to think like him.
Logic requires information. Trust requires only a promise.
Look at everything through the mind of Jesus. We exchange the negative with a thought from Jesus… make war relentlessly on negativity. You are the king or queen of your emotions and it’s up to you to rule them in Jesus Name. The natural mind leaves us stuck in places feeling powerlessness.
Don’t pastor the old man, pastor the new man and the old man will die and the new man will live. Whatever you focus on you give life and power to! Let’s find the living voice inside you.
Turn the negative into a positive and see it a different way. Can frustration be a legitimate emotion? Is there any frustration in heaven? If it doesn’t exist in heaven in can’t exist in you. It doesn’t exist in the new man makeup. It does exist in the old man, but not in the new. Do you feel blocked? Have you accepted the burden of the enemy? Are you letting your experience be devalued by those who don’t believe the Lord. People challenge you in what you believe. Do you think and believe it? Bring your thinking in line with your believing. Be transformed by the renewing of our mind. All those thoughts need to be reframed in the mindset of the Spirit that speaks from heaven into your circumstances. The word of the Lord is , you have heard it said AND NOW I SAY…whatever he is speaking into your circumstances that changes your thinking and therefore acting.
Spiritual appraisal, says what if frustration is designed to point to an upgrade? What if every obstacle in front of you, is pointing to elevation in Jesus. All things are possible only believe. What you see in Jesus empowers you to believe as he believes.
Moses (Ex 12:4) had never been eloquent in times past or now. He’s coming with a problem frame. “Seriously, look at me…here am I but why don’t you send him?” This is how he sees himself. “You don’t want to send me, it would be embarrassing.” All God said to him was, “See I make you as God to Pharaoh.” God saw not a problem but an exciting possibility. God sees all the possibilities of who you are and what he wants to make you. Gideon – poor, small, etc but God said NEVERTHELESS. He never wants you to be the LESS. He totally ignores what you just said when you tell him all the reasons you can’t do something. He looks at you and ignores everything you just said, and tells you what he is going to make of you.
Moses just wants to get in there and not stutter, but God wants more. He wants him to sound like God himself. God has pictures of you that are way bigger and when He starts to speak to you, he is defining who you are. He will never define you according to your old nature. He is redefining you according to your new nature. Get over your bad self and come into your new self so we can all have some fun!
A new language a new mind set. I have been crucified in Christ …and the life I now live, I live by faith in the Son of God (Gal 2:20). Phil 4:13 — I can do all things in Christ.
What’s that? It’s a mindset. See it and embrace the new thinking that is present. The word of God reframes the picture of ourselves and gives us a whole new language for our identity.
